Where We're Staying
Set in the heart of Hanoi’s French Quarter, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is an icon of the city, just moments from the Opera House and within easy reach of the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. Opened in 1901, the beautifully preserved hotel blends French colonial elegance with refined Vietnamese touches. Known for its impeccable service and sense of history, the Metropole has earned global recognition over the years. One of the hotel’s most striking features is its original bomb shelter, hidden beneath the grounds and now restored, quietly anchoring the property’s elegance in lived history.
We are also very excited to be fully privatising a beautiful cruise boat for one night. Cruising through the quieter waters of Lan Ha Bay, Heritage Line’s Ginger offers an intimate and refined way to experience Vietnam’s dramatic seascapes. With just twelve spacious suites, each with a private balcony, the vessel pairs Vietnamese heritage design with contemporary comfort. Days unfold at an unhurried pace, combining gentle exploration with exceptional onboard dining and spa experiences, making Ginger a secluded and elegant escape away from the crowds of Ha Long Bay.
Stretching along the pristine sands of Ha My Beach, just south of Hoi An, we end the trip at the Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, a serene, all-villa retreat rooted in Vietnamese architecture and feng shui principles. The spacious pool villas are set within lush gardens, offering privacy and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. While the atmosphere is calm and restorative, the resort is perfectly positioned for exploring Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town and central Vietnam’s UNESCO heritage sites, paired with the understated, intuitive service Four Seasons is known for worldwide.
What We’re Doing in Vietnam
Atlas Adventures is heading to Vietnam for an unforgettable trip that combines culture, history, unique landscapes and relaxation in some stunning properties. We begin in Hanoi, the bustling capital of Vietnam. Here we will dive into the incredible food culture this country has to offer. We’ll also dig deeper into the country’s recent past with a guided visit to the wartime bunker beneath our hotel, learning how this historic building played an important role during the war.
From here, we head north to Halong and Lan Ha Bay to board our beautiful and fully privatised overnight cruise aboard Heritage Line’s Ginger. This is a true highlight: calm waters, dramatic limestone scenery and a slower rhythm. Expect kayaking through amongst the stunning scenery, sunset views from the deck, exceptional dining and time to properly switch off: whether that’s in the spa, on your balcony or with a guided morning Tai Chi practice.
A short domestic flight takes us to our last stop in Hoi An, settling into beachfront calm. The final days are intentionally unhurried, with plenty of free time to enjoy the resort, visit a local tailor to get made to order clothes, explore Hoi An’s ancient town or simply relax by the pool and beach. For full details on accommodation, inclusions and pricing, see the itinerary below.
Meet Your Hosts
This Atlas Adventures trip to Vietnam is led by Marigold, our Asia‑based trip planner, whose connection to the region goes back to her very first backpacking trip at 18.
Now living in Shanghai, Marigold visited Vietnam last year and loved every minute of scouting this journey. Working closely with local partners to shape the balance of culture, food, and downtime, she’s been hands‑on in crafting an itinerary that showcases the warm culture, fascinating history, and beautiful landscape of this country.
This trip reflects how she likes to travel: welcoming meals, getting stuck into the local food scene, learning about Vietnam’s history through meaningful places (including the wartime role played by our Hanoi hotel), and leaving room for enjoyment rather than rushing from place to place.
She’s excited to take Atlas girls to a continent she loves and share a country that she truly believes has so much to offer…with better chopstick skills than her first visit, and plenty of stories to go with them.
Who is this trip for?
Atlas Adventures are built around a shared set of values rooted in kindness. We believe in prioritizing connection (whether with locals or fellow travelers), keeping an open mind through all experiences, and being adaptable with all that travel may bring. If the descriptions below sound like you, we want you to join us!
You are extremely flexible, open minded, easy-going and always up for a range of experiences.
You’re a positive person who looks for the best in all circumstances.
You enjoy meeting new people and are keen to make friends on this trip.
You desire to be a better traveler: respecting other people, other cultures + the planet along the way.
UNIQUE CONSIDERATIONS FOR Vietnam
You’re open to trying different foods: excited by vibrant, flavour‑driven food and enjoy eating your way through a destination. Whilst we can cater for dietary requirements with advance notice, note that many broths are made with meat, so vegetarian options may be a different meal than the group is eating. Vietnamese cuisine is central to daily life. Expect fresh herbs, fragrant broths, seafood, and plenty of opportunities to put those chopstick skills to good use. Whilst the hotels we stay in will offer Western cuisine (and cutlery!), you should be comfortable with Vietnamese food.
You’re comfortable with a mix of planned experiences and relaxed free time. Some elements of the trip are guided, while others, particularly in Hoi An, are intentionally left open for you to explore, unwind, or head out independently. Optional activities are available, but there’s no pressure to do everything.
You’re happy with varied travel styles and transitions. This trip combines city stays, a domestic flight, an overnight cruise, and some travel by coach- moving from Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay and down to the coast. Transfers are organised, but flexibility and an easygoing mindset go a long way.
You don’t struggle significantly with motion sickness: we will be spending one night on board a cruise boat and have several coach journeys.
You are prepared for traffic and can be flexible. Mopeds are a major form of transport, and the city centres can be extremely hectic. Traffic can be bad, and travellers need to have a mindset of going with the flow and adapting timings where needed as a result.
You don’t mind light activity and a bit of movement. While this isn’t an intensive tour, there will be walking in cities and uneven ground in places, plus optional activities like kayaking during the cruise. Comfortable footwear is recommended.
You’re open to learning about Vietnam beyond the surface. From understanding daily life through food to exploring the country’s recent history, including the wartime role of our Hanoi hotel, this trip offers cultural and historical context alongside the highlights.
You’re ready for warmth, humidity, and a slower rhythm at times. May is warm and can start to be a little tropical in the middle of the day. We have planned to have relaxed parts of the day during the warmer times.
